Simon was born in 2004 and brought to the Sacred Heart School by his grandmother to ask if he could attend. He is now living with his grandparents who are very old and poor. His mother is HIV positive and has moved to Murungaru with her daughter, where she has found work. At one time she was married to Simon's father. They separated and he later died of AIDS. Simon has a place in Standard One. The grandmother sends him to school with lunch and he has been given a new red sweater. Although he often looks anxious, he is quite talkative and appears to miss his mother a great deal. He asks his teacher 'Can I call you Mum?' There are plans for Simon to go and see her soon.
